Curator’s statement
There's something special about cruising the Western Mediterranean Sea in the wintertime. For us, it was even more special when we went on our first Viking Cruise in 2022 — it was our honeymoon! Viking's Ocean Mediterranean cruise itinerary gave us the perfect way to experience the region's beauty at a slower, more intimate pace. Wrapped in cozy scarves, we explored historic sites without the usual crowds, wandered through charming coastal towns and took in breathtaking views from the ship's beautiful and expansive decks. One night of our cruise we even enjoyed a complimentary bottle of champagne, gifted to us from Viking for our honeymoon, while we watched the sunset as the luxurious city of Monte Carlo sailed by — a memory we will never forget! The crisp sea air, peaceful ambiance and romantic atmosphere of the cities we visited on this itinerary made every moment onboard Viking Cruises feel like a dream. It was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, creating memories we'll cherish forever!

Things to do in port

Things to do in Florence, Italy
Piazza del Duomo - No visit to Florence Italy is complete without seeing the historic heart of the city! Dating back hundreds of years, this square still remains a vibrant gathering place where art, history and architecture come together in this vibrant Renaissance city of Italy.
Signum - If you are looking for a unique and beautiful shop to pick up a souvenir or two, I highly recommend Signum. During our visit here in early December, we found a lovely ornament decorated with real Florentine gold. It has been a cherished way to remember our honeymoon visit to Florence!
Palazzo Pitti - Originally built in the 15th century, this gorgeous palace was once home to the notorious and prestigious Medici family. The architecture of this palace is truly impressive, and the history can be felt through every step you take around the grounds.
Basilica di San Lorenzo - If you're looking for a hidden gem to explore, we recommend this Basilica. A little off the beaten path, this historic site is often far less crowded than some of the other Basilicas in the area.
Things to do in Marseille, France
Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde - A truly breathtaking piece of architecture, history, and religious significance, this basilica is located close to the port, closer than some of the others in the city. It is a bit of walk, but is doable.
Fort Saint-Jean - This is a beautiful place to explore and walk around for at least an hour or two. Offering a great glimpse into Marseille's history, while also offering some fantastic views of the city. Also located relatively near the port.
Bazaar Caesar Soap - A great little shop off the beaten path that offers locally made products such as soaps and perfumes. I highly recommend checking out this local shop if you are looking for a souvenir from Marseille.
Things to do in Barcelona, Spain
The "Iconic Western Mediterranean" itinerary offered by Viking Cruises can either embark or disembark in the exciting city of Barcelona, Spain. There is so much to do and see in Barcelona, that I highly recommend taking at least a full day to explore this port city either before or after your Viking cruise.
Park Guell - An expansive park, museum, and more, Park Guell is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Designed and inspired by the iconic architect Gaudi, a visit here is a must when you are in Barcelona.
Basilica de la Sagrada Familia - This unique and awe-inspiring church is something that must be seen with your own eyes. Truly a world wonder.
The Street of La Rambla - This main boulevard is the place to be in Barcelona. There is so much to explore up down this street. I recommend dedicating at least a couple hours to just wandering this part of the city. You never know what you might discover!
Places to eat & drink in port

Barcelona, Spain
Mercat de la Boqueria - Local market with produce and locally made products
Marseille, France
Bonne Miette - Great bakery and small cafe for a quick, delicious meal
Need to know
Viking Cruises is one of the only cruise lines that offers ocean cruise itineraries around the Mediterranean in the wintertime. The Iconic Western Mediterranean itinerary is available nearly all year long (except for certain months).
This is one of the only itineraries in which cruise passengers can sail the Mediterranean during Christmastime and in the middle of winter. This time of year is a great time to visit popular Mediterranean cities, as there are far fewer tourists and crowds to contend with.
