Curator’s statement
I was recently invited to join a group of friends on a trip to Reykjavik, Iceland to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday. As someone accustomed to the sunny, dry warmth of South Florida, I initially hesitated to venture into a climate so drastically different. However, I'm incredibly grateful that I did. The rich culture, delicious cuisine and breathtaking landscapes all combined to make it an unforgettable and joyous journey. Not only did it create lasting memories, but it also strengthened my bonds with my already cherished friends.

Things to do in Iceland

Embark on a guided walking tour of Reykjavik. Delve into the history of this island nation and familiarize yourself with the city for the remainder of your journey. Remember to pack a rain jacket and umbrella, as Icelandic weather is known for its sudden changes.
Explore Hallgrímskirkja. It the largest church in Reykjavik and one of Iceland's tallest structures. For the adventurous, consider ascending to the top of the tower for a nominal fee and enjoy stunning panoramic views.
Experience the renowned Rainbow Street in Reykjavik, a vibrant symbol of joy and diversity in this LGBTQ+ friendly city. Following your tour of Hallgrímskirkja, stroll down Rainbow Street towards the iconic shopping avenue, Laugavegur. Don't forget to capture some Instagram-worthy photos along the way!
Indulge in shopping along Laugavegur Street, home to Reykjavik's premier bars, shops and galleries. This bustling thoroughfare also hosts the city's vibrant nightlife scene, promising an unforgettable evening out.
Discover Laugardalslaug, a swimming pool experience unlike any other. Swimming pools hold a special place in Icelandic culture, serving as communal gathering spots akin to your neighborhood coffee shop. Laugardalslaug features two pools, seven hot tubs, a steam bath, a cold tub and much more, offering a true immersion into Icelandic leisure and relaxation.
Pingvellir National Park is where you truly encounter Iceland's awe-inspiring natural splendor. Nestled within a rift valley bridging the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, Pingvellir stands as a testament to geological marvels. Not only is it the historic grounds where the first Icelandic parliament convened until 1798, but it also boasts a landscape adorned with fissures, lakes and canyons. Recognized for its significance, the park earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004.
Gullfoss waterfall reigns as Iceland’s most renowned cascade, cascading 32 meters in two breathtaking stages into the canyon below. Sourced from Langiokull glacier, Iceland’s second largest, its pristine waters carve through the landscape with unmatched grandeur. Adventurers can embark on a hike to the falls' summit, capturing awe-inspiring photographs along the way. However, be prepared with a raincoat to shield against the waterfall's mist, lest you find yourself thoroughly drenched by its powerful spray.
The Geysir area stands as a highlight along the Golden Circle route, alongside Pingvellir National Park and Gullfoss. True to its name, it boasts a collection of geysers, among which The Great Geyser holds renown, though not for its energy — that distinction belongs to Strokkur. This energetic geyser erupts every few minutes, soaring up to 40 meters in height. Moreover, visitors can explore a plethora of mud pools and geothermal features, adding to the area's captivating allure.
More waterfalls await on your exploration of Iceland's South Shore, with two absolute must-sees. First up is Seljalandsfoss, fed by the majestic Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Plummeting 60 meters from its summit, it offers a unique experience with a footpath behind the falls. Perfect for capturing breathtaking photos — just remember your raincoat to shield against the spray! The second gem is Skogafoss, hailed as Iceland's most picturesque waterfall, as it cascades dramatically into a narrow canyon below. For the intrepid, a hike to the pinnacle rewards with stunning vistas extending to the distant sea, adding an extra layer of adventure to your journey.
Are you familiar with the renowned Icelandic horses? Originating exclusively from the far North Atlantic region, these equines stand out for their distinctive traits. Notably, they possess five distinct gaits and exhibit one of the broadest arrays of color variations among all horse breeds globally. Embark on a guided horseback excursion with these remarkable creatures to explore the countryside. Immerse yourself in their gentle disposition, offering an unforgettable experience in the Icelandic landscape.
Another captivating destination along the South Shore is Reynisdrangar and the striking black-sand beach of Reynisfjara. Reynisdrangar comprises basalt sea stacks rising from the North Atlantic, steeped in folklore. Legend has it that these formations emerged when two trolls attempted to haul a three-masted ship ashore but failed, petrifying into towering needles of rock by dawn's light. Set against the backdrop of the renowned black-sand beach of Reynisfjara, this scene has earned acclaim, being listed among the top ten most stunning non-tropical beaches worldwide.
Imagine yourself unwinding amid the world-renowned Blue Lagoon. Envelop in the soothing embrace of its warm, serene waters, while surrounded by the ethereal vista of lava fields and wisps of steam dancing in the crisp air. Recognized as one of the 25 Wonders of The World by National Geographic in 2012, this iconic destination is unmatched elsewhere on the globe. Fed by seawater rich in silica, algae and minerals, the lagoon offers skin-nourishing properties, elevating your relaxation to new heights. Enhance your experience further with a distinctive in-water massage, adding an extra layer of indulgence to your visit.
