Curator’s statement

Tanzania’s famous “Northern Safari Circuit” of Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Parks attracts hundreds of thousands of travelers annually. For those seeking an authentic safari experience away from the crowds, I highly recommend southern Tanzania. This itinerary explores the vast landscapes of Ruaha and Katavi National Parks and includes chimpanzee trekking before finishing on the sublime beaches of Pemba Island.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam

Transfer in a private vehicle to a hotel near the airport upon arrival in Dar es Salaam. This is an opportunity to unwind after a long flight before embarking on your safari.

Day 2-4: Ruaha National Park

Start your day back at the airport for your flight to Ruaha National Park. Upon arrival, take a short game drive to Jabali Ridge, a sophisticated safari lodge perched like a bird's nest on a rocky outcrop. The lodge's eight luxurious suites open up to an expansive view of the vast savannah adorned with baobab trees and elephants.

Your stay includes morning and afternoon game drives or walks, which provide opportunities to spot kudu, sable antelope, giraffes, wild dogs, or one of the numerous lion prides that roam the region.

Day 5-7: Katavi National Park

Following breakfast, take a brief flight from Ruaha to Katavi National Park. Renowned for its remoteness, the park spans over a million acres of seldom-explored floodplains and grasslands, providing a tranquil escape from tourist crowds.

Chada Katavi is a classic tented safari camp that offers an authentic experience and deep immersion in the wilderness. It's an ideal spot for fly camping, allowing you to sleep under the stars amidst the wildlife. The park is home to abundant plains game, including some of the planet’s largest herds of hippos and buffalo.

Day 8-10: Mahale Mountains National Park

After your Katavi adventure, embark on another short flight to Mahale Mountains National Park, situated along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Upon arrival, transfer to a dhow boat to reach Greystoke Mahale. This small camp promises barefoot luxury and offers one of the world's finest opportunities to encounter chimpanzees. Days are spent on treks into the mountains to observe our closest primate relatives. There are also eight other primate species and a diverse array of flora and fauna along the park's trails.

Lake Tanganyika, Africa's largest lake, features white sand beaches that host various activities such as kayaking and diving. While the beach isn't swimmable due to crocodile presence, a dhow can transport you to safer, deeper waters for swimming and serene sunset cruises.

Day 11-13: Pemba Island

Beach with beach chairs, white sand and blue water.

In the morning, return to Dar es Salaam and board a short flight to Pemba Island. The island is a laid-back alternative to the more touristed Zanzibar, and The Manta Resort is one of the few luxury properties. Here, you can relax on the beach and go on an afternoon dive adventure in the crystal clear waters. This idyllic setting offers a supremely relaxing conclusion to your Tanzanian adventure.
